Wellington Walking Festival 2026
The programme has been published and the events are open for booking
Bob Coalbran
It is with great sadness that we heard that Bob died, peacefully, after a long illness, on Friday 10th July.
Bob joined our committee in 2012, not long after he was recommended to try walking by the Healthy Lifestyle advisors at Telford and Wrekin Council. He confided to our secretary that, prior to this recommendation, he had thought that walking was an odd thing to do for pleasure. Also, his wife says that he climbed the Wrekin early in his walking, only telling her when she found him sweaty and exhausted when she came home from work.
He soon made an impact, and his house became the venue for most committee meetings and at least 2 AGMs. By 2013 he had become our first footpath secretary and took over our seat on the Local Access Forum (LAF), and instigated the path maintenance team.
He was the driving force and main author of our Wellington 360 leaflets, a series of easy to follow walks around Wellington and the surrounding countryside.. He also contributed greatly to the walking festivals and our presence at local events.
He was a good networker , achieving most of his aims with humour, warmth and a smile. He ensured we cooperated with LA21, The Shropshire Way Association, The Wrekin Forest Partnership, The Friends of Dothill LNR, The Friends of Wellington Station, and Telford and East Shropshire Ramblers among others. Through the LAF he and TES Ramblers were able to secure improvements on the local footpath network, notably in Limekiln woods.
He spent some time on the national Walkers are Welcome Committee, and during that time made strong links with other Walkers are Welcome towns in Shropshire organising a regional get together at the Buckatree Hotel in March 2014.
Bob continued his activities with the group until the 2021 AGM, when he decided to withdraw from WWaW and from the other local organisations he had supported so ably. He remained a good friend to the group and we were delighted when Wellington Town Council gave him a Civic Award last November.
Our thoughts are with his wife Jennie, who is a regular member of our path maintenance team.

Extension of Ironbridge Park and Ride to The Wrekin
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday between July 10th and Sept 13th , there will be a bus between Wellington and The Wrekin and Ironbridge. Please use it to show it is needed and appreciated. Our August 2nd walk will use it.
